Lunches?

I've enjoyed being home all summer! Now, as much as I'm fighting it, fall is headed this way. That means school is just around the corner, in fact classes start in a week. Nature Girl will enter first grade and for the first time will attend school for a full day. This will be a big change for her. We've done our back to school shopping. She's equip with her school supplies, a new backpack and lunchbox.

A full day of school means she'll need to have lunch. I work in a school and can't imagine that the school lunch will be any better than the lunch at my school, so she'll be bringing her lunch. That said, here's the problem, I don't know what to send! She eats peanut butter sandwiches, ham sandwiches, bagels, salad, fruits, veggies(not peas or green beans,) mac n' cheese, tomato soup, grilled cheese, cheese sticks, yogurt and cereal. She's not much of a meat eater but loves fruits and veggies. But what does one send for school lunch? It has to be something that she can open and eat independently without having to heat it. We bought a reusable water bottle and a thermos for keeping things cold or hot.

Being a teacher I should know what kids bring for school lunch but I don't. At school I have bus duty not lunch room duty, so I'm lost here. What would you send to feed this sweet little face?

You should look into Bento boxes. I still prepare them for my teenagers and they love it!!!

did Bentos for mine for awhile too. But if that doesn't appeal to you...we keep it simple. Sometimes, we do cheese and crackers, we pack pbjs, pickles, fruit, jello, boiled eggs, salads (Kaela's fav), leftover biscuits with a slice of turkey...we just do a lot of little things so she has leftovers to snack on after school...little tummies get hungry so late in the day.
I also pack 1 hershey kiss or something and lots of love notes during the year.....

Try to keep her lunch box full of fun. DS likes "kebobs" made with cubes of cheese and pepperoni on toothpicks. Or you could do fruit/veggie and cheese kebobs. Since I have a picky eater and never know what he'll be in the mood for, I usually pack a few little portions in small containers. Things like black olives, baby carrots, graham crackers, goldfish. What he doesn't eat for lunch is his afternoon snack.

My kids rarely took a lunch to school. If it wasn't the norm for most people, they didn't. Only if all of their friend group said they were bringing lunches did they. So I'm clueless as to what to bring. My high schoolers either came home, after they could drive, or walked to somewhere close. And we live in a COLD winter place. It isn't cool to eat in the lunch room or bring a lunch here.
